ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS

The excavation initially involves the removal of the surface soil if necessary by mechanical means, although the removal by hand is recommended. In fact, although the archaeological attractiveness of modern and current finds may seem limited, this material can provide useful information on the most recent presences in the site. In rural areas and in the abandoned sites, any archaeological evidence should be visible immediately under the mantle of humus, while in urban areas the same visibility and preservation of the remains may be affected by numerous factors. In both contexts, the first task is to establish the intervention strategy by providing the main subdivisions of the excavation, in the past this was done manually with metric measurements using a measuring tape, while today the work is facilitated by the use of the so-called "total station" . In this way it is possible to define a suitable strategy for sampling the area to be investigated if it is not possible to bring out the full excavation. The excavation is being conducted proceeding neatly from the most recent layers to the most ancient ones.
